In fact meditation is nothing to do with religion. Anyone, regardless of his or her religion, can practise meditation and enjoy the health benefits from it. Meditation can help you to improve your mind function and overall health.

Meditation has been proven to reduce stress levels and it can even help with conditions such as high blood pressure. What I love about practising meditation is that it can help me to calm my mind and help me to concentrate better. This also helps a great deal in my work career as I can focus a lot better and able to see opportunities that come across my way.

Another great benefit of meditation is that it makes you to be aware of good health and this allows you to make healthy choices in your lifestyle.

But, What Exactly Is Meditation?

Meditation is all about the mind game. It helps you to focus and clear your mind. But it takes a little time and effort to get the hang of meditation, this is because our minds are so cluttered with so many things these days. With some practice and patience, you will be able to get into the habit of meditating. Once you are able to make it part of your habit, you will be able to reap the many health benefits from it.

Perhaps the next question to ask is, how to do meditation?

To get started, find a quiet place where you can be comfortable. You can sit in a cross-legged position, but this isn't mandatory. You may find another sitting position that is more comfortable for you, but the key is to maintain a good posture. Do not slouch, because if you do, you will get tired easily and feel like falling asleep.

Here are some techniques to help you focus and clear your mind:

Focus on your breath. Start to breathe in and out slowly, and for each breath you take, focus on the air that is going through your nose. Try not to think anything that is related to your works, just focus on empty your mind and clear your thoughts.

As mentioned, this will take some practice. Thoughts are inevitable and they will come through your mind. When thoughts appear, focus on your breathing intensely. With some effort, you will be able to get thing going smoothly.

Another technique is to keep on telling yourself and your mind to focus on the present moment. Do not think of the past or the future, think of the present moment; your present state of mind.

When you are able to make meditation part of your habit, you will have a more focused mind. This can certainly help you to do your job or business better as your mind is now clear and is able to focus on the tasks at the present moment without worrying about your past or future.

Effective Stress Buster

Meditation is really an effective stress buster. You see, stress is caused by worrying about the past or the future. One of the best quotes I have ever come across about stress is from a very successful self development guru "Eckhart Tolle", here is what he says: "Stress is caused by being 'here' but wanting to be 'there."

Get it? Let me repeat... "Stress is caused by being 'here' but wanting to be 'there."

That is why meditation is so effective in managing your stress because it helps you to achieve calmness in your soul and mind. It helps you to focus on the present time instead of the past or future.

The absence of stress will improve your health in many ways. You'll likely enjoy lower blood pressure and a strengthened immune system. Stress can also lead to mental disorders, so when you strive to be stress-free, you will keep anxiety and depression away as well.

But of course, there is no such thing as a stress-free life these days. Stress is always present in our life, the important thing is how we manage the stress.

Author: klazinaandersen

Article Source:

Knockin' On Heaven's Door

Having grown up with rock legend Bob Dylan, Rob Borsellino always wanted to shake the hand of his favorite artist. It is not a sea plant, but does grow in fresh water bodies that contain a higher than usual amount of salt. Because of its natural ability to grow in warm environments that other organisms cannot survive in, spirulina is actually one of the most sterile foods on earth. It is also known to be one of the earliest forms of life and has been on the planet for more than 3.6 billion years. Spirulina is both a complete food and a whole food supplement. Long before it became known as a “probiotic” or “super food” by the health food industry, spirulina has been consumed by humans worldwide for centuries because of its rich nutrient range and ability to sustain life even without need for other foods. Today, spirulina farming has become a part of the new era of ecological agriculture and is recognized as a powerful food source.

Spirulina also contains extensive levels of trace elements and essential minerals. In its natural aquatic environment, minerals that have been deposited from ancient soils become chelated with their amino acids and can thus be more easily assimilated by the body. Aside from being a vegetarian source of vitamin B12, other major nutritional components of spirulina that are of significant value to human health are Essential Fatty Oils (rich in gamma linolenic acid (GLA) which is effective against viral infections and promotes cardiovascular health), Phycocyanin (stimulates the immune system by making iron more bio-available), Chlorophyll (cleanses and detoxifies the body and helps to remove heavy metals from the system), Beta-carotene (10 times greater than carrots), and antioxidants (for complete immune support).

For more than 30 years spirulina (Spirulina platensis) has been the first choice for supplementing a vegetarian diet. This special blue-green algae is a good source of numerous vitamins, minerals, carotenoids, and essential fatty acids which are very difficult to reach and maintain at sufficient concentrations with a vegetarian diet. Most notable is the high quality protein, which contains all nine essential amino acids. Although this simple organism has been around for millions of years, it was only fairly recently when it has earned recognition as the superfood of the future because of its remarkable nutritional content. Spirulina, in comparison with either beef or soybeans, is a much better source of protein. It is also among the rare non-animal sources of vitamin B12, and contains twice the amount of B12 found in beef liver, which makes it an excellent addition to the vegetarian diet.

In the United States, Spirulina is sold as a dietary supplement, and dietary supplements are regulated as foods, not drugs. Therefore, premarket evaluation and approval by the Food and Drug Administration are not required unless claims are made for specific disease prevention or treatment.

Health Benefits of Spirulina

Spirulina is best known for its ability to boost the immune system, and research indicates it may even help both treat and prevent cancer. Spirulina stimulates the natural killer (NK) cells that fight illness and attack and kill cancerous cells. In one study performed in India, participants taking spirulina saw a complete remission of mouth cancer. Spirulina is sometimes referred to as the world’s richest natural whole food source because of its phenomenal nutritional profile. It is also referred to as a “green food” or “whole food” because not only does it contain a huge array of trace minerals, carbohydrates, enzymes , amino acids and essential fatty acids, greater than 60% of spirulina is a highly digestible and biologically complete plant protein, providing higher amounts of protein than either red meat or soy.

Owing to the fact that Spirulina is rich in highly valuable proteins, amino acids, vitamins, beta-carotene and other pigments, mineral substances, fatty acids and polysaccharides, spirulina has been found beneficial for use as a bioactive additive. Spirulina strengthens the immune system by improving the synthesis of antibodies and cytokines thus improving resistance of humans, mammals, chickens and fish to infections. Spirulina sulfolipids have proved to be effective against HIV. Preparations obtained from Spirulina biomass have also been found active against herpes virus, cytomegalovirus, influenza virus, etc. Spirulina preparations are regarded as functional products contributing to the preservation of the resident intestinal microflora, especially lactic acid bacilli and bifidobacteria.

Spirulina has shown the ability to enhance immune function, and it also promotes hematopoiesis (formation and development of red blood cells) due to the high levels of iron present in this food supplement. Spirulina may protect against allergic reactions by blocking the release of histamines. By blocking histamine release, spirulina may prevent or lessen histamine’s effects, which include blood vessel expansion, muscle contraction, and stomach acid production. Spirulina contains beta carotene, zeaxanthin and phycocyanin which have powerful antioxidant activity. Antioxidants are thought to protect body cells from damage caused by a chemical process called oxidation. Both the antioxidant and immune-enhancing effects of spirulina may give it some anticancer properties.

Additionally Spirulina increases production of antibodies, cytokines (infection fighting proteins), and other cells that improve immunity and help ward off infection and chronic illnesses such as cancer. In those with chronic hepatitis Spirulina may help protect against liver damage and cirrhosis (liver failure). Gamma linolenic acid (GLA) in spirulina is anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative. It is potentially useful for individuals with rheumatoid arthritis and diabetic neuropathy. It may also play a role in lowering plasma triglycerides and increasing HDL cholesterol, thus preventing cardiovascular diseases.

Purity and Concentration of Spirulina
Our Spirulina Powder is stored in dark, airtight vacuum sealed bags, and is very fresh. As a Protein source, Spirulina contains all eight essential amino acids. This is an important feature for two primary reasons: 1) because the body requires that all protein factors be present simultaneously to synthesize the body’s repair and maintenance; and 2) because spirulina’s primitive cellular structure and lack of hard cellular walls allows for rapid formation and synthesis of proteins, thus allowing for higher and more effective digestability of protein. Our Spirulina powder has more than 60% protein, Alanine (8%), Arginine (7.4%), Aspartic Acid (10.2%), Cysteine (0.9%), Glutamic Acid (15.5%), Glycine (5.0%), Histidine (1.6%), Isoleucine (5.3%), Leucine (9.1%), Lysine (5.2%), Methionine (2.0%), Phenylalanine (4.5%), Proline (4.1%), Serine (5.0%), Threonine (5.0%), Tryptophan (1.4%), Tyrosine (4.2%) and Valine (6.0%). Having already been naturally pre-digested by the algae in its natural environment, spirulina is a highly digestible food and complete protein source.

People who are vegetarians or who have a poor diet or one loaded with processed food should definitely consider taking this supplement-it is a safe, nontoxic, and very efficient way to meet your total nutritional needs. In addition, many people reported that adding spirulina to their diet gave them extra energy and in some cases eliminated feelings of fatigue. There have been no toxic effects associated with the consumption of spirulina.

Potential Side Effects of Spirulina

Spirulina is not an essential nutrient and no symptoms of deficiency exist. Spirulina is considered generally safe. Possible side effects include headache, muscle pain, flushing and sweating. People with allergies to spirulina should avoid products containing spirulina. No interactions of spirulina with foods, medications, or herbs are documented. Spirulina grown in water contaminated with heavy metals can concentrate these toxins. Therefore, it is important to purchase products from qualified manufacturers and suppliers.

Recommended Dosage of Spirulina

We suggest you take between 25 and 100 grams per day of Spirulina powder for an average sized adult. Mix 10 grams, or approximately one rounded tablespoon in 8 to 12 ounces juice or water. For maximum results, take the juice/water three times a day. You can see the full bulk density/volumetric conversion chart for Spirulina here. Taking 1/2 level tablespoon will supply a total dose of about 4.5 grams. For weight loss, a dose of 200 mg has been taken three times daily by mouth just before meals. It can also be mixed into a smoothie of your choice if you prefer.

Retail dosages of Spirulina powder are commonly between 3 and 10 grams daily, this is partly due to retailers trying to keep the perceived monthly costs of consumption down. However, spirulina in the bulk powder form is much less expensive, and literally as a complete food, you can eat as much of it as you like. Some pre-modern cultures in South America & Africa probably consumed more then 250 grams per day (nearly 50% of their entire diet) of Spirulina Powder in the form of sundried cakes.

The information at Purebulk.com is NOT a substitute for medical advice. ALWAYS consult your doctor or pharmacist. Do not use any dietary supplement as a replacement for conventional care, or as a reason to postpone seeing a doctor about a medical problem. Tell all your health care providers about any complementary and alternative practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care.

Bioavailability, Mixing and Solubility of Spirulina

Spirulina powder has a dark bluish green appearance and has a slight marine smell and taste. Spirulina is slightly soluble in normal water. But its solubility characteristics show maximum solubility in the pH range of 8 to 10 in water and pH 6.0 ± 0.5 in 0.5 M sodium chloride. The most common and accurate way of measuring the Spirulina powder is by tablespoons (tbsps.) and teaspoons (tsps.). Spirulina is best in water or juice. Any recipe for a smoothie works well with Spirulina. It does not have a very bad taste and can be easily covered up in juice or smoothies. It is possible to sprinkle food or use as a seasoning to soups, dressings, dips, sauces and casseroles. When adding to liquids though, it best to blend the Spirulina powder in a small amount of water before adding to recipes.

Proprietary Formulas using Spirulina

EARTHRISE Chlorella, EARTHRISE Spirulina, FUTUREBIOTICS Vital Green, JARROW Yaeyama Chlorella, NATROL China Chlorella, NATURE’S WAY Chlorella, NATURE’S WAY Spirulina, NOW Chlorella, NOW Green PhytoFoods, NOW Spirulina Powder, NUTREX HAWAII Spirulina Pacifica, NUTRICOLOGY KingChlorella, SOURCE NATURALS Yaeyama Chlorella, SUN CHLORELLA Pet Sun Chlorella.

References & Further Research

Spirulina and blood cholesterol: Hypocholesterolemic effect of spirulina in patients with hyperlipidemic nephrotic syndrome.

In nephrotic syndrome, large amounts of plasma proteins are lost in urine, causing a decrease in the plasma oncotic pressure. This leads to enhanced hepatic synthesis of albumin and other proteins, including lipoproteins, causing a secondary hyperlipidemia. In this study 23 patients (age 2 to 13 years) with nephrotic syndrome received either medication (group I) or medication plus 1 gram a day Spirulina. It can be concluded that spirulina capsules, rich in antioxidants, GLA, amino acids, and fatty acids, helped reduce the increased levels of lipids in patients with hyperlipidemic nephrotic syndrome.

Spirulina and exercise performance: Preventive effects of Spirulina platensis on skeletal muscle damage under exercise-induced oxidative stress.

The effects of spirulina supplementation on preventing skeletal muscle damage on untrained human beings were examined. Sixteen students volunteered to take Spirulina platensis in addition to their normal diet for 3-weeks. The results showed that plasma concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) were significantly decreased after supplementation with spirulina. The activity of blood superoxide dismutase (SOD) was significantly raised after supplementation with spirulina or soy protein. Both of the blood glutathione peroxidaes (GPx) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels were significantly different between spirulina and soy protein supplementation. In addition, the lactate concentration was higher and the time to exhaustion was significantly extended in the spirulina trail. These results suggest that ingestion of Spirulina platensis showed preventive effect of the skeletal muscle damage and that probably led to postponement of the time of exhaustion during the all-out exercise.

Spirulina and allergic rhinitis: Effects of a Spirulina-based dietary supplement on cytokine production from allergic rhinitis patients.

We evaluated the impact of a Spirulina based dietary supplement (Earthrise Nutritionals, Inc., Irvine, CA) on patients with allergic rhinitis by assessing the production of cytokines [interleukin (IL)-4, interferon (IFN)-gamma, and IL-2] critical in regulating immunoglobulin E-mediated allergy. These results indicate that Spirulina can modulate the Th profile in patients with allergic rhinitis by suppressing the differentiation of Th2 cells mediated, in part, by inhibiting the production of IL-4. To our knowledge, this is the first human feeding study that demonstrates the protective effects of Spirulina towards allergic rhinitis.

Protective effect of Spirulina on lead induced deleterious changes in the lipid peroxidation and endogenous antioxidants in rats.

The present study aims to investigate the protective effect of Spirulina on lead-induced changes in the levels of lipid peroxidation and endogenous antioxidants in liver, lung, heart, kidney and brain of rats. Levels of elemental lead were also measured in the organs of rats in all experimental groups. In the liver, lung, heart and kidney of lead-exposed animals, there was a significant increase in the lipid peroxidation and a decrease in the levels of endogenous antioxidants. Although, Spirulina did not affect the deposition of lead in organs apart from the brain, simultaneous administration of Spirulina to lead exposed animals significantly inhibited lipid peroxidation and restored the levels of endogenous antioxidants to normal. Spirulina had a significant effect on scavenging free radicals, thereby protecting the organs from damage caused by the exposure to lead. Further more, Spirulina showed a significant decrease in the deposition of lead in the brain.

Who Knew ALSA Supported Qigong?

Bill Douglas is the Founder of World Tai Chi & Qigong Day and the 2009 Inductee into the Internal Arts Hall of Fame. Over the next three months things seemed perfect to them, but Matt noticed that Sabrina seemed ill. She was tired easily, she sometimes had trouble speaking, she was losing weight.

When he asked if she was ok she told him it was fine, the doctor was treating her.

What she did not tell him was that only a month after they started dating she had been diagnosed with ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease and the prognosis was not good.

Finally after her surprise sweet 16 party two of her friends, both in tears, broke the news to Matt.

He was obviously devastated but when Sabrina asked him if he was going to leave her because of the diagnosis he responded “I will never leave you, no matter what”. For both of them facing trials in life was not new.

Sabrina’s grandmother and mother both died from ALS. Matt had been diagnosed with a mild learning disability, had endured teasing from schoolmates due to speech problems and had watched his grandmother die from cancer. But both overcame these problems.

As their romance progresses the terminal nature of ALS was always in the back of their minds. Over time Sabrina grew weaker but Matt was always there, acting as her supporter, her helper and when speech became difficult her interpeter.

When the Make A Wish foundation arranged a trip to Orlando for the family Matt joined them. When Sabrina was unable to ride an attraction Matt stayed by her side. Despite her illness they attended prom together and were elected king and queen.

The only real burden hanging over them was the fact that they would nto spend their lives together. Matt would always start talking about ‘when we get married’ until his mom explained why that would be impossible.

But she had an alternative, a friendship ceremony which would allow them to experience a wedding like event and it would allow Matt to tell Sabrina it was ok to let go. As his mom explained patients often fight until they feel like loved ones will allow them to let go.

On November 20th, 2010 they and their families shared a ceremony that was in every sense of the word a true wedding.

Nine days later Matt got the call that he should come to the hospital as quickly as possible.

He spent the night holding *his wife’s* hand until she died in her sleep the next morning.

If there is a better example of true love I have yet to see it.

And if there is a better example of two amazing teenagers…

source : http://themoderatevoice.com/95704/love-is-forever/

Sexy Evil Genius

Kara “Starbuck” Thrace is a woman with many sides: sexy fighter pilot, evil (or, at the very least, ruthless) towards her enemies, and a genius on the battlefield. For her next role, actress Katee Sackhoff is combining all three of those sensibilities to become a Sexy Evil Genius.

The Hollywood Reporter has the story that the Battlestar Galactica star is joining the cast of Sexy Evil Genius in the title role. Greek showrunner Shawn Piller is directing the film from a script by Scott Lew, a filmmaker afflicted by ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, the same malady suffered by Stephen Hawking. Lew is a quadriplegic and wheelchair-bound. He cannot speak and writes using an infrared dot on his forehead, pointing to letters and words on the computer screen.

"Writing is the only way I really get to express myself with complexity." Lew said.

Inspired by Scott and the message of the film, the film’s producers took no fees and are donating their entire share of revenues to ALS charities. The production company behind the film matched that generosity so that a quite sizable share of all revenues generated by the film will go directly to ALS charities.

Air Up the Football - "Journey On"

In September, Ty Herndon, Country singer partnered with former NFL player Kevin Turner to join forces in the fight against ALS. Over a 40-year professional relationship with the Alouettes, Proudfoot carved out a special place in the hearts of Montreal football fans, first as a player over nine of his 12 CFL seasons -- two of them as a CFL All-Star defensive back -- and later as a coach, game analyst, broadcaster and, in his own words, cheerleader.

In May 2007, at the age of 57, Proudfoot was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. Characterized as bulbar onset ALS, this type of ALS first targets the motor neurons that control speech, swallowing and breathing.

If you're in need of reading the words of a true ALS mentor, you'll enjoy this, and remember no whining allowed. Tony Proudfoot's ALS

Eyewriter 2.0

Some of you might remember the story of Tony Quan, an LA Graffiti artist who lost his ability to perform his talent due to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

Technology helped him regain his talent with EyeWriter glasses connected to the CPU of a laptop. This EyeWriter enabled Tony to move his eyes, and special dual projectors create an image.

A recent update to EyeWriter was on display at the Cinekid festival. I have a video here after the jump so you can see it working.

You will note that the person has to have his or head braced in a very stationary place, and then the eye-trackers do their work. It looks like these people are using a keyboard, and then the robot arm with the marker “prints” it out.

Eyewriter 2.0 / Livewriter Demo At Cinekid from Theo Watson on Vimeo.

Coolest Gadgets

WHERE ARE THE CURES

Educate Yourself

Of the billions of dollars spent on medical research each year, few if any patient treatments emerge. There being no chance of his finding it in that darkness, he went out on the street and started looking for it there. Somebody passing by stopped and enquire:
- What are you looking for, Mullah Nasruddin ? Have you lost something?
- Yes, I've lost my ring down in the basement.
- But Mullah Nasruddin , why don't you look for it down in the basement where you have lost it? asked the man in surprise.
- Don't be silly, man! How do you expect me to find anything in that darkness!

From the book "When the Body Says No" by Dr. Gabor Mate: When it comes to healing, if we look only in the easy places, we usually find what Nasruddin and his neighbors found under the streetlights, nothing. Nasruddin, in his role as fool, did not know that. In his role as sage and teacher, he did.

Nasruddin, fool and sage, exists in all of us.

Health rests on three pillars: the body, the psyche and the spiritual connection. But neurons also talk to the cells around them. The communication between neurons and support cells is important for the healthy functioning of the brain. But does it play a role in disease too?

Jeffrey Rothstein, a professor of neurology and neuroscience, shows that the failure of this communication can indeed contribute to neurological illness.

Specifically, his group demonstrated that neurons in amyotropic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, suffer from a failure to communicate with helper cells called astrocytes. The results appear in last week's issue of Neuron.

Further study may lead to the discovery of how to slow or even stop this degenerative and destructive process, in the hopes of preserving astrocyte-neuron connections and brain function.

What we have is a failure to communicate - Mind to Cells , something to think about.

More ...... Neuronal cross-talk implicated in disease - Science

Is ALS "One Size Fits All"

Are patients with ALS being package as "One Size Fits All"? As you may have already experienced, ALS will be the worst three letters that your healthy body has ever heard. ALS will be stamped and confirmed on all your documents until your final days. In the months ahead you will have hundreds of ALS questions. Like myself, it will probably take about two years to sift through all the data. You will soon learn that ALS is spoken daily in general terms without regard to specific details.

ALS is complicated and the wait continues for any reasonable solution. For example, Medpedia on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis has the following description of Familial ALS (10% of ALS cases). There are many different types (1,2,4,8), but mostly they involve four age groups with different progression rates. Research has identified four different genes, but the cause of death for motor neurons as related to muscle weakness and atrophy is still unclear.

Sporadic ALS (90% of ALS cases) carries less explanations while the outcome is the same. We do know that sporadic ALS can attack either sex at any age. To date there are 27 direct categories of sporadic ALS. I cannot spell them or can I pronounce them, but whenever a patient is diagnosed with something unusual or a different detail is noticed, research gives it a new title.

I am positive that your initial first two years from diagnosis were or soon will be a traumatic event. More than ever, in our quest for answers our minds continue to be engaged with our dreadful ALS status. Recently head trauma was introduced as something that mimicked ALS in the case of the first advocate, Lou Gehrig himself. The one detail that may be a clue, is that, after his head trauma occurred, Mr. Gehrig (The Iron Horse) continued to play through pain for five years. What was his mind trying to tell his body, and how was the body reacting?

So, we learn that ALS is all over the charts, and clearly does not belong to the slogan of one size fits all. I realize that ALS belongs to the neurology family, but I have one question. What if? What if there was a way of removing the trauma that may be responsible for the ALS situation. Personally I have found it possible for one to manage or quiet the mind going through this journey? Now, I know this may be a stretch, but is it really possible to reverse our situation? It has been done before, and while the ratio is small, there are those that have decided to think outside that "One Size Fits ALS" package.

One such person is Evy McDonald, R.N., M.S., M.Div. Evy is one of the first patients to have reversed this normally fatal disease. Her journey serves as hope and inspiration to others dealing with serious health issues. It may be to your advantage or interests in giving serious thought to what Evy has to say in her published articles. Find those articles at the American Holistic Health Association.

Being good to your ALS organization, and raising research dollars may be important, but that should be the smallest part of your life. Take it from this ALS patient, you have more than enough time to be good to yourself. Find your size, possibly live better, live longer.

Scientists Shift from Studying Disease to Studying Health

by Dr. Christiane Northrup

As a Doctor, I’m often asked how to reverse a medical condition or disease state. Although I know the causes of many illnesses as well as what to do to relieve a person’s symptoms, the focus of my life’s work has been on prevention. This means adopting the habits and lifestyle you need to live a long, healthy life—and doing it as early in your life as possible. Most people believe that disease is inevitable and that they will die of something dreadful, like cancer, heart disease or Alzheimer’s disease. And most scientists study patients with disease to determine what contributed to the individual’s illness. So, I was thrilled to learn about Richard Davidson, Ph.D., and the work that’s being done at the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin under his direction. Dr. Davidson established The Center “to scientifically determine how healthy qualities of mind develop and to investigate interventions to cultivate those qualities in children and adults.”

In May 2010, the Dalai Lama traveled to Wisconsin for the grand opening of the Waisman Center at the University of Wisconsin, where some of Dr. Davidson’s research will be conducted. Dr. Davidson had been inspired by his holiness the Dalai Lama many years ago when the Dalai Lama posed an interesting question of him. The Dalai Lama had noticed that our Western culture put a lot of emphasis on studying diseases of the mind, like anxiety and depression. The Dalai Lama asked Dr. Davidson what does our Western science say about a healthy mind, and what are the characteristics of a person with a healthy mind. Dr. Davidson didn’t have an answer.

Dr. Davidson began to determine which practices encourage compassion, happiness, and well-being. Of course meditation was on the top of the list, and many studies have already been conducted on Buddhist monks to understand the positive effects that meditation has on the brain and body. The Center for Investigating Healthy Minds continues to study a health mind as defined by the Dalai Lama: “The kind of mind which can create good health, and also which can maintain calmness, and also bring more sense of community. That mind is, I think, a healthy mind.”

What If Lou Gehrig had More Than ALS

Dr. Gabor Maté has lived several lives in one. He's most decidedly a risk-taker: the bestselling author of a controversial book on attention-deficit disorder called Scattered Minds, Maté is a political activist known for his (even more controversial) views on the Middle East, and a physician/psychotherapist who gave up his family practice several years ago to work with HIV-positive heroin addicts on the Vancouver's downtown east side. Unflinching in the face of criticism, this is a man who will not keep silent about his multiple passions.

In his latest book, When the Body Says No, he goes out on a medical limb with his passionately-argued thesis that certain types of chronic disease can be triggered by stress. And not the garden variety stress we usually think of (the job, the kids, the mortgage), but internal stress generated by the repression of powerful emotions, particularly anger.

In his many years as a palliative care physician, Maté observed in his dying patients certain eerie similarities in personality. Many of them were cheerful and agreeable to a fault, never seemed angry, placed everyone else's needs above their own, and were harshly critical with themselves. Their personal boundaries seemed fragile and uncertain, as if they did not know where they left off and others began. In many cases, it was nearly impossible for them to say "no," to the point that their bodies had to say it for them.

These personal observations matched up with certain discoveries in the relatively-new field of psychoneuroimmunology, the science studying the intricate interaction between psyche and soma. The mainstream medical idea of a "mind/body split" no longer made sense to Maté, so he set out to probe the mystery of what makes us sick, and how we can guard our health through a better understanding of boundaries, emotional honesty and personal autonomy.

Though the book has been warmly received by readers and is already climbing Canadian bestseller lists, it has not done so well with certain members of the medical community, not to mention some reviewers (the Toronto Globe and Mail was particularly caustic, though they did praise his elegant and graceful expression of complex ideas). Maté's critics claim the author blames people for getting sick, that his ideas are too touchy-feely and that the science isn't there to back up his claims. However, When the Body Says No presents compelling evidence that our psyches and our bodies are so inextricably intertwined that they are inseparable.

As for emotional repression, Maté found it has very long roots. What happened to us when we were kids really does affect us dramatically in the here and now, especially if "negative" emotions like anger were repressed and love was poorly expressed. And early trauma leaves an impact like a wrecking ball hitting delicate crystal.

ALS - Stress, Strain, and Adaptation

Many years ago I enrolled in a class that studied Jewish civilization through their 5000 years of existence. The three points of the triangle have been forever present in their existence. I find these three points of a triangle to be helpful in explaining the existence of ALS. Be it, 5000 years or 140 years, I find Stress, Strain, and Adaptation the same for both.

While waiting on a miracle, nearly 6 1/2 years, I arrived at this ALS triangle that is helping me understand. I talk constantly to myself, and through my years I have had many conversation. If you are diagnosed with ALS what alternatives do you have other than fighting for your life? I have concluded that we "Do" have alternatives, and I believe I am on a path to control my days living with ALS. No one has offered the trigger or magic bullet that explains the way we contract ALS. We are led to believe our genes have some tragic role as to who we will become. Genes can only provide us with the way we look, color of hair and so forth. New science is replacing that gene theory of disease with one that focuses on the Mind-Body connection that communicates with cells through a thought process that is better achieved in meditation.

We live in a society that is dependent on medicine. The medical field is afraid to look any further than their prescription pads. What if it was as simple as controlling Stress? Stress is a five letter word that could contain 500 different categories. In my daily conversations with myself, I have been able to narrow down and trace my personal history of stress. Over the past year I have been trying to understand this Mind-Body connection and have made progress towards calming my disease. What if Lou Gehrig had more than ALS? What if, Stress was the defining factor? I am not suggesting that we are responsible for our illness, merely suggesting we were not aware of the Silent Stalker called Stress.

I started with Qigong meditation with limited movements in meridian (circulation-range of motion) body flow. Each day I awake from peaceful sleep using a Bi-Pap machine followed by inflating my lungs with the use of a Cough Assist machine. From there I meditate 20 minutes to prepare my mind for the possible stressors of the day. Meditation is repeated in the evening to reunite mind with body. This regiment guides my thoughts in telling ALS I will not surrender.

Strain in an ALS world can be excruciating. There is that daily uncertainty, the hunt for information, and that daily lack of control. This affects every thinkable family member from grandchild to grandparent, relatives, and of course your spouse if you have one. Strain, by definition is going to be part of your ALS life, and others whether you accept it or not. Strain could also breed Stress if Stress awareness is not taught in the ALS circles of family, and relationships.

Family caregivers of patients suffering from ALS are at higher risk for depression than the patients they care for. Caregivers of ALS patients tend to be progressively more depressed and more burdened over time, whereas the patients remain more or less stable in term of depression and quality of life. A lack of leisure time and the inability to leave the home or see friends are potential reasons for the decline as well as feelings of hopelessness, isolation, loneliness, and sadness. The problem is that caregivers are afraid to mention their own needs and concerns, because they feel it's selfish to complain when their loved ones are going through this tragic event. So, I think it important to remember the health of the caregiver. At the same time, primary care physicians need to ask the ALS patients what in fact is going on with their spouse. We need to look at this situation as one that could be more devastating to others health than the tragedies of ALS itself.

Adaptation is the place that this journey takes us to. If you want to live, you will be willing to adapt to many new choices. While there is no cure there are ways to get around many of life's challenges on a day to day basis. Adaptation has many frightening categories, from surgically implementing holes of life in one's body. You'll have options for a feeding tube in the stomach, and options for a breathing port in the throat. Adaptation may come in the simplest form of not being able to scratch an itch, to having pleasurable sex on Saturday night. How about having your spouse approach your face with the razor? There are those moments when being fed in public are uncomfortable and not making it to the restroom on time, embarrassing. By definition, Adaptation in ALS is living life to the fullest, your choice.

Yes, ALS has a triangle. Understanding that triangle with its three points will help us understand ALS. We need to think past the patient, and think of the total, overall ALS circle. Nothing has been decided on the ALS medical front, and I say we keep all options on the table that benefit those involved in this tragic dilemma.

The Rise Of Prescription Drugs In America

NPR News

Prescription drug spending is the third most expensive cost in our health care system. And spending seems to grow larger every year. Just last year, the average American got 12 prescriptions a year, as compared with 1992, when Americans got an average of seven prescriptions. In a decade and a half, the use of prescription medication went up 71 percent. This has added about $180 billion to our medical spending.

While there are more medicines on the market today than in 1992, researchers estimate that around 20 percent of the $180 billion increase has absolutely nothing to do with the number of medications available, or increases in the cost of that medication.

Because doctors exclusively held the keys to the kingdom, drug companies spent enormous amounts of time and money trying to get their attention. To give you a sense, the average doctor got around 3,000 pieces of mail a year from the drug industry, and to break through this noise often took years.

Today, drug companies spend $4 billion a year on ads to consumers. In 1997, the FDA rules governing pharmaceutical advertising changed, now companies can name both the drug and what it's for, while only naming the most significant potential side effects. Then, the number of ads really exploded. The Nielsen Co. estimates that there's an average of 80 drug ads every hour of every day on American television.

ALS Patient with Enlightenment (Age of Reason)

I had an appointment with my general practitioner last fall and the waiting room was full. The only people allowed direct access to the doctor were those intrusive pharmaceutical reps. I'm sure you've seen them with their little briefcases on wheels rolling past you as you wait. I finally got into a examination room where the doctor was interrupted by another yet different rep. The doctor apologized for the intrusion and we were able to continue my exam. I take very few prescription drugs, mostly vitamins, as all ALS patients must watch their co-pay amounts. Toward the end of my exam, the doctor asked me what was my overall condition. I felt it the appropriate time to tell him of my improved nature through meditation, and books I had read on the "mind-body connection".

His reply "that's very nice, do you need any refills on your medications?"

To Be Continued

Wait'in on a Miracle

Unfortunately, ALS patients are caught between that famous rock and some hard place. The mainstream medical community has offered up little in the way of treatments or cures. For those anchored to that hard place, the FDA appears to be little more than the guard dog for government agencies --pandering to the big pharmaceutical companies and ignoring any possible treatments coming from the outside of various research ventures. One would think that there would be at least some new drug or treatment in their pipelines for these orphan diseases. Nothing to date, and nothing within the last 70 years. ALS patients are left helpless, and are left looking at less conventional alternatives of any kind.

One such person, however, in this hunt without ALS, is the ever lasting, never aging, comedian Jerry Lewis. The Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon was created in 1966, and raised $500,000 on its first telecast. The show continued to gain popularity and huge stars joined the telethon throughout the recurring years. Then, in 1973, with 150 stations in tow, the "Love Network" moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where it continued to grow at the Sahara Hotel. It was also the year the telethon broke the $10 million mark, with its final tote being $12,395,973.

This is important to this ALS patient because in 1976 I was an engineer who helped create the stage for this energetic promoter and successful philanthropist. The "Love Network" grew with endless optimism, and heart felt hope. All totaled, this event would take six weeks to construct and two weeks to tear down. It was a two month project that was highlighted with a 24 hour caring spectacle like no other. Our department was sad to see that last curtain call when Jerry sang, "You'll Never Walk Alone".

As of 2007, the telethon has raised $1.5 billion, and is now syndicated to approximately 190 television stations throughout the United States. Last year, the Labor Day Telethon set a new record of $60,481,231. Partnering with Augie Nieto in 2006, the MDA was able to create its "ALS Division" which has added another $26 million, created by the "Augie's Quest" foundation that is dedicated to finding a cure for ALS.

With all this hard work, years of fund-raising, Jerry Lewis is not a satisfied man. He is frustrated that his efforts have not cleared a path for more neurological improvements or cure. He has arrived at a place where he is seeking a better quality of life and a deeper understanding of the diseases that remain without a cure.

I look forward to this years Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon. I hope Jerry Lewis remains healthy enough to at least see something, something in the way of a cure before his last curtain call.

Pecans and ALS - It's Nuts

Eating about a handful of pecans each day may play a role in protecting the nervous system, according to a new animal study published in the current issue of Current Topics in Nutraceutical Research. The study, conducted at the Center for Cellular Neurobiology at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, suggests adding pecans to your diet may delay the progression of age-related motor neuron degeneration. This may include diseases like amyotropic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Mice provided a diet supplemented with pecans displayed a significant delay in decline in motor function compared to mice receiving no pecans. Mice eating the diet with the most pecans (0.05%) fared best. Both pecan groups fared significantly better than those whose diets contained no pecans. The result was based on how the mice performed in highly specific tests, each of which compared mice on the control diet with mice consuming pecan-enriched diets.

For more information on the health benefits of pecans, recipes, photos and much more, visit www.ilovepecans.org.

Dr. Gabor Maté: “When the Body Says No: Understanding the Stress-Disease Connection”

The Vancouver-based Dr. Gabor Maté argues that too many doctors seem to have forgotten what was once a commonplace assumption—that emotions are deeply implicated in both the development of illness and in the restoration of health. Based on medical studies and his own experience with chronically ill patients at the Palliative Care Unit at Vancouver Hospital, where he was the medical coordinator for seven years, Dr. Gabor Maté makes the case that there are important links between the mind and the immune system. He found that stress and individual emotional makeup play critical roles in an array of diseases.

It’s also typical for people that develop ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. I talk about the example of Lou Gehrig, if I may tell you about that. Lou Gehrig was this great baseball player, a teammate of Babe Ruth’s on the New York Yankees. And he set a record for consecutive games played that stood for nearly sixty years. Now, Gehrig wasn’t just a great athlete. He was also dutiful. He—it’s not that he was never hurt. At one point, his hands were x-rayed. It turns out his fingers had been fractured seventeen separate times. And his teammates described him as grimacing like a mad monkey in agony when he fielded the ball. But he never took himself out of a game, because he was too dutiful to his own self-image and also to the fans and to the owners. Now, that sense of responsibility, and not looking after yourself, is totally typical of everybody who develops ALS. And it goes back to their childhoods, because, just like with the woman with rheumatoid arthritis, she was a failure the moment she was born, because her mother conceived her to keep the marriage together with the father. The marriage broke up, and she never had the feeling that she was accepted and liked for who she was, therefore she had to become this dutiful caregiver. Lou Gehrig’s father was an alcoholic, and Gehrig learned very early in life that he had to take care of others, as the children of alcoholics often do. And that then became his pattern until he could no longer drag himself around the baseball diamond because of the ALS, which in North America, of course, is known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Democracy Now Feb. 15, 2010

Cough Assist for ALS

Cough Assist
Studies have shown prolonged survival and a delayed need for tracheotomy by over a year with its use?

The CoughAssist noninvasively helps patients clear bronchial secretions when they can't cough for themselves. The CoughAssist is a safe, comfortable way to reduce the risk of airway damage and respiratory complications. Helps patients by enhancing or replacing their natural removal of bronchial secretions with the gradual application of positive pressure to the airway followed by a rapid shift to negative pressure. The slow inhale/rapid exhale airflow simulates the natural coughing process while avoiding the potential problems associated with more invasive procedures. Many physicians now recommend the Cough Assist or Exsufflator. This product is often ordered prior to or at the same time as the BIPAP. The Cough Assist is a prescription item that is covered by Medicare and Medicaid.

Find out more, ask questions and pass on the information;<br research imposed by President Bush eight years ago, some people continue to oppose this move and call it unethical. So, while the scientific community is thrilled by the news and says the research will lead to medical breakthroughs, some communities consider the research as a “slippery slope”. But, what exactly are stem cells and why are they so important as to generate hot debates among all sorts of circles – political, social, religious, and what not? Here’s a look at some of those details.

The science behind stem cells. What sets stem cells apart from other cells is their ability to turn into any other type of tissue in the body. A stem cell from the bone marrow, for example, can be transformed into a neuron or nerve cell in the brain.

Types of stem cells: Embryonic stem cells versus Adult stem cellsBroadly, there are two types of stem cells in humans – embryonic stem cells and non-embryonic stem cells. Embryonic stem cells (ESC), as the name suggests, are isolated from the inner cell mass of an early stage embryo (4-5 days post fertilization, and consisting of 50-150 cells). On the other hand, non-embryonic stem cells which are also known as adult stem cells are found in adult tissues.Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent as opposed to adult stem cells that are multipotent. What this means is that embryonic stem cells can differentiate into any of the more than 220 cell types in the adult body (to be able to give rise to any mature cell type) while adult stem cells can only form a limited number of cell types (closely related family of cells).

The controversy, The controversy behind stem cell research pertains only to human embryonic stem cell research and not all stem cell research. What is controversial is the fact that the source of the research material, human embryos, is destroyed in the process of harvesting the stem cells. Pro-life activists oppose the research arguing that a human embryo is a human life that is entitled to protection.Another area of controversy is that embryonic stem cell technologies are a slippery slope that may lead to reproductive cloning which may devalue human life. The production of adult stem cells, on the other hand, does not require the destruction of an embryo and therefore, adult stem cell research and therapy are not as controversial. Though, adult stem cell treatment does carry a risk of rejection by the body’s immune system.

Utility of stem cells, The importance of stem cell lies in the fact that they can be converted into any type of other cells or tissues in the body – neurons, pancreatic tissue, heart muscle cells, etc.So, for example, stem cells harvested from your bone marrow can possibly be used to repair the damage in your heart muscle caused during a heart attack, or to correct blood disorders such as sickle cell anemia (anaemia) through transfusions of stem cells.Stem cell therapy is believed to have the potential to dramatically change the treatment of human disease. Embryonic stem (ES) cell therapies have been proposed for regenerative medicine and tissue replacement after injury or disease. But, it should be noted at this point that embryonic stem cell therapies are not in use yet. They are still only in the stage where medical researchers are testing them on animals. On the other hand, adult stem cells have been successfully used to treat leukemia (leukaemia) and related bone/blood cancers utilizing bone marrow transplants.

The present state of stem cell research, There are some countries that offer treatments using stem cells (read about medical tourism) but in such therapies only adult stem cells derived from the patient’s body are used (autograft). When possible, autografts are preferred as they remove the risk of rejection by the recipient’s body. There is promising research ongoing in the field of stem cells to derive treatments for a wider variety of diseases including cancer, Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injuries, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), multiple sclerosis, lung disease, arthritis, organ failure, and muscle damage, amongst a number of other impairments and conditions.

The future, The ultimate question on the minds of many is – “Why can’t we simply use adult stem cells instead of harvesting embryonic stem cells?”Theoretically, embryonic stem cells are considered better because they work as a biological blank slate and are the most versatile of all stem cells whereas adult stem cells are sort of semi-specialized cells and are not as versatile as ESCs.Though the field of adult stem cells is not marred by controversies, the problem with adult stem cells is also that they are often present only in minute quantities, are difficult to isolate and purify, and their numbers may decrease with age, according to a primer by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

At this juncture, much remains unknown about the potential of embryonic stem cells. But, going by the success in the field of animal testing it may very well turn out that embryonic stem cells could provide solutions to many diseases in humans. The answer to the potential benefits of ESC lies in research. To understand the benefits of embryonic stem cells or any type of stem cells for that matter, and to discover possible treatments in humans, various lines of research need to be pursued simultaneously.Only research can prove if adult stem cells are better over embryonic stems cells for curing human diseases or vice versa. It may also emerge that adult stem cells offer good treatments for certain ailments, while embryonic stem cells are better for curing others.

Because You Really Love that ALS Patient

Pamper yourself with a gentle, warm aerated stream. Many universities in the world conduct research in many topics and some of them are giving more focus on the health section. One of them is Harvard with it's Stem Cell Institute. The Harvard Stem Cell Institute's overall aim is to use the power of stem cell biology to understand and ultimately treat selected diseases and conditions.

In short, The Harvard Stem Cell Institute is a place where scientist from many places gathered are trying to find new treatments for many kinds of illnesses and brings hope to many people who suffer from many illnesses. Through science and knowledge we can all ease our fears.

Harvard is not the first who investigated the possibility with stem cells, but was done by Ernest A. McCulloch and James E. Till in the 1960s. Nevertheless, Harvard took the action to improve what was done in the past and combined it with the technology that has significantly improved the research methodologies and techniques to develop new breakthroughs in all medical areas.

Why stem cell? Many scientiest believes that stem cells therapy can help people who have illnesses, such as leukemia, cancer, parkinson's disease, spinal cord injuries, ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), multiple sclerosis, and muscle damage. For now, most of these diseases can't be cured, but with the advancing technology, science will find the cure for these illnesses and many people can be saved in the future.

"It Don't Add Up"

He was diagnosed six years ago with ALS and those years have been a horrid revelation of our final days . From the start it was such a shock to think that this terminal thing had gotten to us. All those test just to make sure, and waiting for the confirmation made me sick and unable to sleep. Those days changed us forever and when the truth came, I was relieved. I at last knew what it all meant. I said "It don't add up". Warning signs of panic shot up all around us, "You got to plan ahead, you got lots to learn, you have no time to waste". I got confused and as I ventured into the awareness world I found we were not alone. Lou Gehrig made baseball famous, but he died in 1941 of ALS at the age of 38. His Doctor sent out a press release prior to his death that said he had polio to give his fans hope. I thought, "It don't add up".

He was told to get a second opinion just to make sure, but I had and saw little hope. I began to hear voices of newly diagnosed ALS victims using their moment to talk about finding a cure. They were in every state, news articles, the media, and fund raising events, our new adopted family. So many like him and by this time I'm all fired up with anger. We both planned to be next Awareness Superstar Team, willing to do anything for ALS. On the phone he'd say, "of course I'll be there, call the media because I still have my voice, and when it hits the airwaves, I'm sure it will be another great piece of journalism". Next week he was scheduled for a magazine article and next month is a big outdoor event to raise money for more ALS research. "It don't add up".

Next was the invitation to go to Washington D.C. and show Congress all the hardships of ALS. You would think that these bright guys of the nation would have already heard of Lou Gehrig. We go, using strength he barely has and giving them a good look at how he's fading away. Maybe we get their blessing and maybe not, but we always come away with a photo and a prayer for ALS.

All the effort, all the money, all the research, all the mice, all the care, and all the talk. How much money will it take? How many victims does it take? Look at all the numbers, and it still don't add up.

We will and we must keep this fight in their face. The ALS Association, Please Give.

Pixie Dust for PALS

Lithium combined with Rilutek could slow ALS progression?

Another United States discovery, no this hot item comes from the Italians. I suppose any news is better than no news at all. Lithium has been circulated in the neruogolical fiields for about ten years and now it's the newest healer, well maybe for this week. Something is horribly wrong with research results verses dollars spent. If Rilutek was more effective we would not need this new Peter Pan theory using Pixie Dust to slow ALS progression. Seems to me this sort of distraction only keeps us in that revolving door spinning between Life and Breath. We need Uncle Sam to stop wasting tax dollars on agencies that take a disease and uses it to create weekly paychecks. How about creating one task force to work on one disease. Make them accountable for progress every quarter, no results, new team / new staff.

Like Lithium, ten years back we had another debacle that was called Myotrophin. Kyle Hahn led his fight against the FDA only to have Hope taken from him. Last week we saw the courage of Leo Green giving Hope to Lithium.

Today Kyle and Leo have been taken from us by ALS and the movie never ends, it goes on and on and on.

Lou Gehrig's Patients Get Their Bill Blocked

January 7, 2008 - by Donny Shaw - OpenCongress.org

The ALS Registry Act, S. 1382, has been frozen by Senate trickery. As a person coping with ALS my dream is to keep it on the front page. This century old disease deserves more than a whisper.
ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is the most horrible disease in our modern times. ALS is the disease that takes a deadly toll on the body by a process of total muscle paralysis, which causes death in a very short time. While the amount of those being diagnosed is on the rise our numbers remain just low enough for science and the medical companies to turn and look away. ALS is the disease we like to whisper about. Reminds me of the homeless Veteran standing on the roadside with a cardboard sign that reads "Hungry, God Bless."
Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma is also a Doctor that thinks the Center for Disease Control collecting data on the variables of ALS is a waste of money. The ALS Registry Act was written and introduced four years ago. Endless hours by ALS Advocates and congressional time taken to approve and make sure it is acceptable has all been lost. The Senator found a way to kill the clock just before the other team won; Senate trickery called a "Hold."
Before adjourning for the year, Coburn vowed to put a hold on any bill that didn't meet a set of criteria that he outlined on his website. Apparently, this is one of the bills that didn't make the cut, but Coburn has not yet issued a specific explanation as to why. He's got a lot of explaining to do with this one -- it is co-sponsored by two-thirds of the Senate and the House of Representatives already passed their version of it by an overwhelming vote of 411-3.

Doctor, Senator, Deacon Kills ALS Progress

ALS commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease is the most horrible disease in our modern times. The ALS community is not asking for a handout, we just need to be counted. His name is Tom Coburn, Senator from Oklahoma. The Wall Street Journal posted the front-page article on Dec. 21st and detailed how this Senator worked late while others adjourned for the Holidays. His scrooge style mission was to place a "hold" on selected bills, a procedural maneuver that allows a single senator to prevent a bill from being passed quickly without a roll-call vote or floor debate. The bill held hostage is the ALS Registry Act S.1382. This legislation would authorize the establishment of an ALS Registry at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The House of Representatives passed the bill on Oct.16, 2007 by an overwhelming 411-3 vote. The Senate H.E.L.P. Committee favorably reported the Senate version of the bill on Nov. 14, 2007 and more than two-thirds of the Senate has cosponsored the bill. The ALS Registry Act is needed to build on projects underway at the CDC and supported by the Congress and the Administration.
This bill was drawn up and introduced by Congressman Elliot Engel, N.Y. in 2004. When this bill finally becomes law it may take the CDC two years to collect the first of its ALS data. My question for Senator Coburn would be to tell me how many ALS patients would die in this five-year period. If we had the ALS Registry Act we would know the facts and much more Senator.

All Dressed Up and Nowhere to Go

When I was a teenager I remember a sign out front of a funereal home across from the Dairy Queen. The sign read; Today we lay to rest; Alfred P. Smith (Atheist) All Dressed Up and Nowhere to Go.Since ALS has robbed me of the ability to dress myself I leave everything to my wonderful wife. After a refreshing shower I remained in a trace as she dressed me for the day. It was a Florida perfect day and thought the time had come to do a little outdoor reading. After a while of sitting in the sun my wife brings out my last place Devil Rays ball cap. Dropping the book while turning the page I noticed I had on my boating shoes, fishing shorts, golf shirt and now the baseball cap. If you're familiar with ALS you should know that not one of these sports is possible for me anymore.
